Dahlia Tuber FAQ

Dahlia Tuber FAQ

Tubers are the starchy root system of the dahlia plant. In our climate they don't reliably survive the winter in the ground so each fall they are dug up, washed, divided, and stored until it's time to replant them in the spring.

Our dahlia tubers are sold as individual tubers, not in clumps. All tubers are guaranteed to have at least one viable eye (the growth point on the tuber). Dahlia tubers can vary widely in shape and size, even tubers from the same clump can look quite different from one another. Bigger is not necessarily better, and as long as each tuber has an eye, a strong neck, and a full body it will produce a healthy plant.

We grow, dig, divide, & store our dahlia tubers at our Certified Naturally Grown farm near Mount Vernon, Iowa. We use only organic-approved fertilizers and amendments when growing our dahlias, never any chemicals or synthetics. We store our tubers in untreated pine shavings. Tools for dividing are sanitized between clumps to limit the spread of disease and any susceptible clumps are tossed out.

Dahlia tubers are available both for local pick-up in east central Iowa or for nationwide shipping within the Lower 48 of the United States.

Shipping: Shipping will begin in early April when the threat of frost has passed. Variable shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the weight of tubers ordered. We recommend choosing Priority Mail shipping. Orders will be fulfilled in the order they were received.

Refund Policy
We guarantee to send out only viable dahlia tubers. It is your responsibility to inspect your dahlia tubers as soon as you receive them for quality. If you believe they have been damaged in transit, take photos ASAP and email your concern to emma@rhubarbbotanicals.com.

Once you have received your tubers and inspected them for quality, it is up to you to ensure the proper conditions for planting. Refer to our Guide to Growing Dahlias for key information on growing dahlias properly. We will not offer refunds for tubers that do not sprout due to user error or unfavorable weather conditions.

Substitutions
In the event that we cannot fulfill your order (due to tuber loss in storage or another issue), we will contact you to see if you would like to substitute a similar variety of dahlias or if you would prefer to have a refund.
